The fall of Gingee Fort in 1698 marked more than just a military victory for the Mughal Empire—it represented a complete administrative overhaul of one of South India’s most strategic strongholds. Under Zulfikar Khan’s supervision, the transition from Maratha to Mughal rule was swift and systematic.
Securing the Victory
Following the capture, Zulfikar Khan’s first priority was securing the spoils of war. He personally oversaw the collection and storage of property and military equipment found within the fort’s walls. The transition was brutal for the defeated Marathas—many officers faced execution as the new regime established its authority.
New Leadership Structure
The administrative reorganization reflected typical Mughal governance patterns. Kakar Khan was appointed as the fort’s killedar (commander), while Gazanfar Khan took charge as faujdar of the district. Most significantly, Daud Khan Panni was elevated to faujdar of the entire Carnatic region, demonstrating the strategic importance placed on this southern territory by the imperial headquarters.
Civil Administration
The civilian bureaucracy also saw major changes. Muhammad Sayyad Khan assumed the crucial role of diwan (chief revenue officer), supported by Lala Dajkhni Ray as diwan-pishkar (deputy diwan) and Lala Todar Mai as sheristadar (record-keeper) of the Carnatic.
A New Identity
Perhaps most symbolically, Zulfikar Khan renamed the ancient fortress from Gingee to Nasratgadh—likely honoring his own title of Nasrat Jang. This renaming represented not just conquest, but the complete integration of this Tamil stronghold into the Mughal administrative system.
The year 1108 Fasli (1698 CE) thus marked the end of Gingee’s independence and its transformation into a key outpost of Mughal power in the Deccan, setting the stage for decades of imperial rule in the region.
