Why Gingee Fort Is Called the “Troy of the East”
Gingee Fort, located in Tamil Nadu, India, is often called the “Troy of the East” because it shares similarities with the ancient city of Troy. But what is Troy, and why is Gingee compared to it? This beginner-friendly blog explains Troy, Gingee’s amazing features, and why this fort is still important today.

What Is Troy?
Troy was an ancient city located in what is now northwestern Turkey, near the modern town of Hisarlik. It existed thousands of years ago and is famous from a story called the Iliad by the Greek poet Homer. In the story, Troy was a strong city with huge walls that was attacked by Greek armies in a long war called the Trojan War (around 1200 BCE). The Greeks finally won by sneaking inside using a trick—a giant wooden horse called the Trojan Horse. Troy’s big walls and epic battles make it a symbol of strength and defense, which is why Gingee Fort is compared to it.
Gingee Fort: A Stronghold Like Troy
Gingee Fort, in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, sits on three hills—Rajagiri, Krishnagiri, and Chakilidurg. These hills are surrounded by 13 kilometers of massive walls that use the rocky land to make the fort super hard to attack. Like Troy’s famous walls, Gingee’s defenses had secret paths and clever designs to stop enemies. A great warrior named Shivaji called it the “strongest fort in India” in 1677. Even the powerful Mughals took years (1691–1698) to capture it! This strength is why Gingee is nicknamed the “Troy of the East.”
A Fort Full of History
Like Troy, which was fought over in ancient times, Gingee was a key spot for many rulers. Over 1,000 years ago, the Chola kings used it. Later, the Vijayanagara Empire, Marathas, Mughals, and even the British controlled it. Each group added new things, like stronger walls or temples, making Gingee a mix of different cultures and styles. It’s like a history book you can walk through!
More Than Just a Fort
Inside Gingee’s walls, there was a busy town. You can still see beautiful places like the Kalyana Mahal with its pretty carvings and the Venkataramana Temple for worship. There were also storage areas for food and homes for people. Just like Troy was a lively city in its stories, Gingee was a place where people lived, worked, and prayed. Visiting today feels like going back in time.
