Tag: Maratha resistance

The history of Maratha resistance at Gingee Fort represents one of the most dramatic chapters in the struggle between the Maratha Empire and the Mughal forces in the late seventeenth century. After capturing Gingee in 1677, Chhatrapati Shivaji strengthened the fort’s defenses and transformed it into an important Maratha stronghold in South India. The fort’s massive walls, hilltop citadels, and strategic location made it extremely difficult for enemy armies to capture.

Following the fall of the Maratha capital Raigad to the Mughals, Shivaji’s son Chhatrapati Rajaram escaped to Gingee and used the fort as a base to continue the Maratha struggle against the Mughal Empire. From this southern stronghold, the Marathas organized military campaigns and maintained resistance against Emperor Aurangzeb’s forces.

The Mughal army laid siege to Gingee for several years, making it one of the longest sieges in Indian history. Despite constant attacks, the Maratha defenders held the fort for a long period, demonstrating their determination and military resilience.

Today, Gingee Fort is remembered not only for its impressive architecture but also as a symbol of Maratha resistance and strategic warfare in southern India. The articles under this tag explore the events, battles, leaders, and historical developments connected to the Maratha struggle at Gingee Fort.
